KIDNEY DISEASE
A diagnosis of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) or Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) can be very alarming and when this happens it is important to be able to access reliable information. The first thing to understand is that kidney disease is very common but less than 1 in 10 people with kidney disease develop failure of the kidneys, requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant. If you have any concerns, the obvious first route is to talk to your GP or medical professional as they will understand you and your health issues.
Another valuable source on all aspects of kidney disease is the National Kidney Federation Website. This is an invaluable source of easy to understand facts about kidney disease, written by renal professionals and regularly updated. The NKF is the umbrella organisation for Kidney Patients across the UK and is the only kidney charity run by patients for patients. LAKPA has representatives on their committee and also act as trustees.
Diagnoses of kidney disease are increasing substantially and there is significant research on managing this. How the increase is being managed across the Lister region is covered in an article by Dr Jeevaratnam which you can read here.
